40 Years of Occupation
2 days ago we participated in a protest to commemorate and call for an end to the 40 year Israeli Occupation of Palestine. It must be noted that it only marks the period of time Israel has occupied the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights, and East Jerusalem, which is still only roughly a third of the land. Israel, in 1948, had already taken two thirds of the land, although 90% of the land was Palestinian owned, and the UN partition plan (without Palestinian agreement) called for Israel to have only 52% of the land. Most peace agreements that have been discussed call for a return to the pre-1967 borders, asking for only a third of that original land back for Palestinians. Beyond the facts and dates, it simply reminds us that the violence on both sides and oppression of Palestinians throughout the years has been going on too long. We took a couple of photos in the DC album or you can read more about it and see more footage at the US Campaign to End the Occupation website.
